From Yard to Brand:
Jude’s Mowing

The Challenge
What started as a simple way for my son to earn a little extra money quickly turned into something more meaningful. Over the course of a year, he went from mowing a couple of neighborhood lawns to building a small routine of regular clients. His enthusiasm for mowing has always been there, going back to when he would follow behind me with his toy mower, so seeing that interest grow into something tangible felt like an opportunity to support and encourage it in a bigger way.
When he asked for a shirt with “Jude’s Mowing” on it, it sparked the idea to treat this like a real brand rather than just a one-off design. This became an opportunity to introduce him to the idea of identity, ownership, and pride in his work. The goal was to create something that felt professional but still fun and approachable, something he would be excited to wear and that could help him stand out in the neighborhood.
Strategy & Execution
I approached the project the same way I would any branding exercise, starting with concept exploration and sketching. I wanted the identity to feel simple, recognizable, and connected directly to mowing. That led me to focus on the visual pattern created by mower lines in freshly cut grass. From there, I explored ways to translate that idea into a mark that could stand on its own.
After working through several iterations, I landed on a concept using the letter J as the primary mark, formed from a single continuous line to mimic the motion and flow of mowing. I paired this with a bright green color to represent grass and used white typography to ensure strong contrast. The decision to place everything on black apparel was intentional, helping the design stay clean and readable while also holding up better against dirt and wear from regular use.
Impact & Outcomes
The final result was a cohesive and practical brand that extended beyond just a logo. We applied the design across a sweatshirt, t-shirt, and hat, creating a small but complete set of gear that gave the brand a real presence. The simplicity of the mark made it versatile across different items while still feeling distinctive and personal.
More importantly, the impact went beyond the visuals. When he opened the gifts on Christmas, he was genuinely excited and proud to wear something that represented his own work. It gave him a stronger sense of ownership and motivation going into the next mowing season, turning a small side activity into something that feels a lot more official and meaningful.
